THE STARTING LINE:
BUILDING FROM ZERO
I was 18 years old, I was studying Computer Science In Malta, but I wasn’t doing what I truly wanted. My parents wanted me to follow a more traditional academic path, but my application to the MCAST Art and Design Film program was rejected because I didn’t pass my Mathematics O Level.
A lot of creatives have similar stories when they start out. My name is Andrew Randon. I’ve been a Cinematographer/Filmmaker for over 10 years, and I’ve successfully built a career as a freelancer. Along the way, I’ve worked day-to-day jobs at companies that had nothing to do with filmmaking or content creation.
However, those jobs became stepping stones that eventually led me to work on documentaries, brand commercials, and now creating content for social media. Thanks to the knowledge I’ve gained and, more importantly, the experience from these 10 years, I’m here to share the tools, ideas, and skills that helped me grow into a stable and profitable freelance filmmaker.
SO, WHERE DO YOU START?
While I was at that point, I made it clear to myself that this was just the beginning of a longer journey. I used the experience to grow professionally. While working, I also focused on:
Understanding the market rates
Understanding the camera I was using even if is not the best in the market
Building Authority and gaining experience
Diving into post-production workflows and file storage systems
Visualizing how to apply everything I was learning to my future +10k deals
